The technique of lithography was invented by Alois Senefelder at the end of the eighteenth century. He was searching for a more suitable way of reproducing sheet music. After all kinds of experiments, he ultimately began to use limestone for this purpose. Nowadays, use is also made of aluminium or synthetic plates. Lithography is an indirect printing process and is the precursor of offset printing.
